About Us

WHO WE ARE

Once deserted, neglected or lost, a thousand happy cats have found heaven on earth.

To be able to manage such an organisation needs dedication, from early morning feeding, cleaning, maintenance, medicating, vet visits, buying food. These are just a few of the everyday tasks at Cat Village and something for which Irma Teller is solely responsible.

Cat Village has been in operation since 2004 and to date we have approximately 1000 cats which will have found their forever home here at Cat Village. The cats are not available for adoption due to the fact that they have all come from horrific and stressful situations and we do not want to take the chance of them in a similar situation ever again. Cat Village is a safe, happy and stress-free environment where there are no cages to contain the cats. They live on 2 hectares of natural vegetation, dotted with wooden wendy houses for shelter. The enclosures that we do have are for cats that require special needs. All cats are sterilized. The cats have food and water available 24 hours a day and for once in their lives they are loved and cared for.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to provide shelter, food and medical care to homeless, neglected and previously abused cats within the Gauteng area.

OUR VISION

Our goal for the future is to create a sustainable income for the sanctuary, to enable us to feed the best food we can afford, to be able to pay our Veterinary costs, which even discounted are high, to maintain a high standard of upkeep and maintenance and to be able to pay the wages of 5 workers. It goes without saying that it costs a lot of money to maintain all of this.

OUR MESSAGE

Be a responsible pet owner and have your pet sterilized. Keep them as you would your family. Feed them the best you can afford. Love them and commit to 15 years of their lives. This ultimately eliminates cruelty.

MORE ABOUT US...

Cat Village SA | NPO No.: 033895

The “angel” that made all of this possible, is Irma Teller, a lady entirely devoted to the rescue of abused, abandoned or homeless cats. For many years, Irma and her husband, Herbert, had a desire to create a cat sanctuary where they could care and look after unwanted and neglected cats. In 2004, they decided to put their dream into action and started looking for a property.

Their wish must have been written in the stars, because a friend approached them and offered their property on the East Rand. And so Cat Village was born. And 15 years later Irma still holds the reigns and manages even unfortunately without Herbert and is dedicated to her calling of giving over a 1000 cats a life every animal deserves but sadly never gets. Yes these are the lucky ones. Its been an emotional journey, there have been extremely sad situations and yet the rewards outweigh everything when a once frightened, traumatised sick cat finds peace with the humans at Cat Village and runs to greet you each day. Some of the feral cats that live at Cat Village have never been able to come to terms with human interaction, but then some have – would anyone guess how that happens – Irma sings to them and serves them a special plate of food each day. Cat Village definitely has a “Mother Irma”.
